Williamson was in charge of two matches during the preliminary phase of the month-long tournament – the opening game between England and France in Doncaster and last Saturday’s encounter between France and Australia in Paris. During the past month the Aucklander has also refereed matches in the European Nations Cup tournament. New Zealand Rugby League chief executive Jim Doyle said it was a breakthrough appointment for a Kiwi referee. “This is a tremendous achievement for Leon and for the game in New Zealand,” he said. “Our referees don’t feature too often in appointments for major games so this is a significant moment for us. We’re really delighted for Leon and for our referees as a whole.” Williamson (40) also controlled two games at last year’s Rugby League World Cup. While refereeing regularly in the Auckland competition and at representative level in New Zealand, he has gained much of his recent experience in the Toyota Cup (NYC) and the New South Wales Cup. |
